The Multiverse offers a book recommendations service for your Christmas pressies!

I have always given books to friends and family at Christmas, and going to Hodges Figgis to do my Christmas book buy is a pleasure. I generally have an idea of the books I’m going to get for people – things that have occurred to me throughout the year – and I’m always excited to introduce someone to a book they’ll love. Plus supporting Irish businesses and Irish writers is obviously a cause close to my heart. Perhaps you’re also thinking of including some books in your present shopping. Maybe you already know exactly what you’re going to buy but on the off-chance you don’t, I have a couple of ideas.

I often review books on the site and if you’re looking for inspiration you could trawl through the archives and see what you find. But that’s a mammoth task and you have better things to do, I’m sure. You could also look over the book gift guides I posted last year, and in 2011 and 2009.

Or here’s another idea…

You could leave a comment below, or email me (address here), and ask me for specific recommendations. Perhaps your mother loved Maeve Binchy’s books and would like something similar to get stuck into. Or maybe your Dad doesn’t really read much (I think everyone likes to read; they just have to find the right book) but he loves restoring old cars, Irish history and cats (I’ll find something!). Or maybe you’ve fallen in love this year and you’d like to give your sweetheart a beautiful book (and of course, you’ll write a special note on the inside cover. This is partly why Kindles will never replace actual books.). Whoever the person, whatever your dilemma, I’ll do my best to sort it out.

This little kid is obviously not on my wavelength.

A Multitude of Christmas Present Ideas

In case you are stuck for ideas for Christmas gifts for your nearest and dearest and you know that they would love a book or DVD why don’t you visit The Multiverse Store on Amazon? In it you can find almost all of the books, music and DVDs that I have reviewed over the last couple of years. You can also see my picks for writers and for the fashion obsessed person in your life. Some gems include:

The Sting

A classic movie that almost anyone will enjoy, The Sting rightfully won 7 Oscars in 1973. It’s a brilliant film starring the unbeatable combo of Robert Redford and Paul Newman and one of my favourites. Great for Dad who will probably remember it from when it first came out, great for Mum as she can drool over the male leads, and great for a mate that hasn’t seen it as they’re in for a classic treat!

Harry Potter Years 1-8

I was devastated (OK maybe devastated is a bit strong) when the Harry Potter series came to an end with the final movie this year. If you have any Potter fans in your life then this reasonably priced boxset is a brilliant present. And if you haven’t watched them then you should definitely self-gift! Wait for a cold and miserable weekend in January, light the fire, get some popcorn going and settle in for hours of fun.

Auggie Wren's Christmas Story by Paul Auster

Paul Auster is one of my favourite authors and it’s always a nice idea to give a Christmas themed book as a present, especially when the story is as good as this one.

Bill Graham by Ken Regan

For the rock music fan in your life Bill Graham’s autobiography is a great read. Graham was the legendary promoter who ran the Fillmore Ballroom in San Francisco, a place where icons such as Janis Joplin, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Cream and of course The Grateful Dead played. Graham’s knack for telling a great story combined with the people he met make this a great source of amusement and rock history.

Nippon Girls

For a completely bonkers and totally brilliant music gift you could do a lot worse than the Nippon Girls album I blogged about ages ago. The music nerd in your life hopefully won’t have this obscure gem and I have yet to meet a person who doesn’t love it.

The above are just some of the things you can find if you spend a few minutes browsing. And if you’re looking for further inspiration or indeed a gift for me (!!) you could check out my ever expanding wishlist on Amazon. It’s so big that it can almost be seen from space at this stage.
