The Irish Film Institute are screening their documentary festival ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ from 26th to 29th September. The festival has been a great success in years gone by and I’m glad to see it back on our calendars.
As regular readers know, I am a huge documentary fan and there’s lots on at ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ that I am looking forward to. The Great Hip Hop Hoax tells the story of two Scottish rappers who reinvented themselves as a Californian duo to kickstart their flagging careers. After Tiller is a film about abortion in America and will have relevancy in this country given the protests regarding the death of Savita Halappanavar almost a year ago. Lastly I really want to see Smash & Grab, the story of the Pink Panthers, a group of international jewel thieves.
In addition to all the wonderful films, there are Q & A’s with visiting directors, a documentary shorts programme, and panel discussions. You can see the full programme on the IFI’s website. If there’s anything you really want to see, make sure you book tickets as they have a tendency to sell out quickly!
