In keeping with MAC’s history of using unconventional models (e.g. Lady Gaga, Ru Paul, k.d. lang) to advertise their new season looks they have recently collaborated with Cindy Sherman for the AW 2011 ad campaign.
Cindy Sherman is a world renowned American photographer and film director known primarily for her conceptual self-portraits. Sherman takes feminist themes as the subject matter of much of her work and she assumes the roles of author, director, make-up artist, hairstylist, wardrobe mistress and model. Sherman is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and has exhibited at the Venice Biennale, the Whitney Biennials, MOMA, SFMOMA and The Serpentine Gallery amongst many others. She made the headlines this year when Christie’s achieved $3.89 million for her work “Untitled 96” making it the most expensive photograph ever sold.
Cindy has created three distinct looks as seen below; a technicolour cartoonlike clown, a blonde rich bitch with a hint of perpetual unhappiness in her downturned mouth and a loony character that looks like a child combined with a doll to creepy effect.
