Joel and Ethan Coen, the duo responsible for such brilliant films as Fargo, Burn After Reading and No Country For Old Men, have remade the classic western True Grit. True Grit was originally released in 1969 and earned its star John Wayne the only Oscar of his career.
Both films are based on the novel by Charles Portis. The story follows Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old girl (played by newcomer Hailee Steinfeld) who undertakes a quest to avenge her father’s death. Mattie persuades an alcoholic marshal known as Rooster Cogburn to help her to track her father’s killer down.
The Coen brothers have assembled a stellar cast for this film, including Josh Brolin, Matt Damon, and Jeff Bridges. It looks like it going to be released in January 2011 here which is perfect – we’ll all be broke after Christmas and looking for cheap things to do at the weekend!
