Soundgarden are set to release their first record since 1997’s A-Sides, a greatest hits collection. The retrospective, entitled Telephantasm, is due to hit stores on October 5th and includes songs from all albums and EPs with previously unreleased material. The band have confirmed, via their official site, that a DVD will also be released to accompany it. The band’s first single in thirteen years, Black Rain, was released on August 10th and is floating around on the Internet. Recorded at the same time as Badmotorfinger, it’s classic Soundgarden; heavy and slow with Matt Cameron’s distinctive drum patterns and Cornell’s full four octave vocal range to the fore.
Perhaps it’s a sign of our increasingly commercial times that the basic album package will be released exclusively on September 28th with Guitar Hero for one week before general release. The expanded double disc CD and DVD are available on September 28th also.
I’m a Soundgarden überfan and will be first in the queue to buy the album…unless anyone wants to give me an advance copy to review?!
I can’t find any new videos of the band so I’m going with an oldie. Below is the video for the Beatle-esque Black Hole Sun directed by Howard Greenhalgh which won Best Metal/Hard Rock Video at the 1994 MTV VMAs and deservedly so. Matt Cameron’s drumming in this track is deceptively simple yet awesome.
