Twelve is due to be released in Ireland towards the latter half of this year. It stars Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl) and is based on the book by Nick McDonell. I read Twelve when it had just been published in 2005 and, while it was a good book, I felt that it was all the more impressive that McDonell had written it when he was just seventeen. At the time McDonell was the subject of much media interest and there was speculation that his impressive family connections were partly responsible for his literary success. I remember being particularly struck by Ariel Levy’s interview with him in New York magazine.
The trailer for the movie has been released and, to me, it looks crass and obvious. It highlights the influences of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Bret Easton Ellis and Jay McInerney on McDonell’s book and ends up making it look hackneyed; this has already been done, and been done a hell of lot better. I don’t think I’m going to bother with this one at all.
