A Single Man is released in Ireland tomorrow and is the directorial debut of fashion designer Tom Ford. Ford is credited with bringing the Gucci brand back to life in the 90s and with being creative director of YSL. In 2004 he left his position at both brands, citing creative differences as the main reason. He then started his own line of accessories, menswear and eyewear under the label Tom Ford (thank you for my very lovely spectacles Mr. Ford, I wear them daily).
Ford’s first movie, A Single Man, was self-financed and is adapted from a Christopher Isherwood novel of the same name. Colin Firth stars as George Falconer, a gay man struggling to deal with the recent death of his partner. The movie time scale is unusual in that it takes place in a single pivotal day.
A Single Man also stars Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode and Nicholas Hoult. It has received excellent reviews and numerous award nods, including three Golden Globe nominations and a Best Actor Academy Award nomination for Colin Firth.
