2009 has been a great year for Irish literature. Colm Toibin‘s novel Brooklyn was longlisted for the Booker prize and for the Costa Award. Colum McCann won the National Book Award for his latest novel as I previously reported.
And now comes the news that Peter Murphy has been nominated for the First Novel Award at the Costa Awards. Peter has been nominated for his book John The Revelator, which has been very well received by critics since being published earlier this year. It is the story of small town Irish life as seen through the eyes of the titular John. John’s life is radically shaken with the arrival of Jamey Corboy and the two embark on an adventure together that changes their view of the world. Beautifully written by Irish music journalist Peter, the book is a stunning debut and I hope an indication of great things to come.
Best of luck to our Irish contenders for the Costa prize 2009. The winners are announced on January 5th with the main prize being presented on January 26th.
